I began on a path in life that is so typical to most. In high school, I played some sports and had lots of fun. During the college years, I remained active, ate like a pig and drank lots of beer. I entered the corporate world and spent years at a desk, unfulfilled and unhappy. It seemed like the “further along” I got in life, the further away I moved from good health. After an epiphany of sorts, I came to the conclusion that wholesale changes must be made. And that day, the next chapter began. Nobody is stuck in this life unless you choose to be stuck.
I went for a run. It was only natural. I come from a family of runners. My mother, sister and brother are all avid runners. My mom was a Boston Marathon qualifier. Many of the weekends of my youth were spent traveling to road races and track events. This time around, to say that I hit the ground running would be an understatement. IT WAS ON! I ran 1 mile races, 5ks, 5 milers, 10ks, Half Marathons and eventually Marathons. I LOST 40 LBS!!! Track, trails and roads; I hit them all. Today, my passion for running is second only to my first love; my family. For a late bloomer, I’ve managed to do pretty well. I hold a personal best Marathon time of 2:53:20 (6:36/mile) – 2015 Boston Marathon – 40 Years Old, 1:20:48 (6:09/mile) for the Half. I was a Top 500 finisher at the 2015 New York City Marathon and a Top 5 finisher overall in the Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix series of summer races (2014). I am a work in progress. I’ll get faster. I enjoy the training for these events as much as actually crossing the finish line. Training, racing, coaching, developing fitness programs, mentoring aspiring athletes and developing friendships; for me, it is all part of the journey.
I have passion for running and fitness. And I have a passion for helping people. My goal is to help people become the “healthiest person that they can be.” You don’t need to be fast. You don’t need to be elite. You don’t even have to run (although it helps)! My only requirement of you is a desire to be healthier, fitter, stronger and most importantly, happier. My training philosophy focuses on posture, alignment, balance, flexibility and the development of strength, speed and conditioning through movement and varying intensities. I also believe that a healthy diet, adequate recovery, and a positive attitude are as an important to overall fitness as any workout in itself.
Understanding the benefits of proper nutrition has been an enormous part of my journey as well. In addition to being a Certified Personal Trainer and Level 1 USA Track and Field Certified Coach, I am a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, an AADP Certified Integrative Health Coach and I hold a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies at ECornell University. I have been trained in over 100 different dietary theories and have an open minded approach when working with my clients. I do not believe in a cookie cutter program where “one size fits all.” Our beauty is in our uniqueness.
Be Healthy. Be Fit. Be Inspired. I’ll see you in class. ~ BP
